When I first came to live in Manchester in 1981 it didn't take long to see all the Hadfield units, which was not difficult because there were only 8 of them.<br />
Originally ordered by LNER they were only built after the war and then only delivered in 1954 as the Woodhead electrification was delayed because of the war.<br />
This was well into the British Railways era and they were delivered as Eastern region stock despite working exclusively in Manchester.<br />
By the 1960's the route west of Woodhead was re-allocated to the LMR. and as result the stock was re-allocated too.<br />
They still plied their trade in their little cocoon as they were not able to work any where else as all the old LNER 1500v dc networks on the London area had been converted by this time.<br />
The MSJ&AR was still in existance at the time but had been cut back to Manchester Oxford Road when the Crewe line was electrified to the new standard 25kV ac system. and there was no DC link between them.<br />
Thought was given to working them through to Sheffield on stopping services but their low gearing and the harsh gradients meant they we likely to overheat so they remained where they were - day in day out!<br />
Change came in 1984 when, a few years after the Woodhead route closed, the route was converted to the 25kV system and the Class 506's were consigned to history.<br />
In happier times motor brake second M59401M brings up the rear of Set 1 as it passes through Ardwick on it's way to Glossop and Hadfield in early March 1982.<br />
One set was preserved and was passed around various sites but the issue of no where to run the unit hindered its preservation prospects and it quickly deteriorated and was eventually scrapped leaving just a cab and the guards accommodation remaining.</p>
