The Thinker (Le Penseur), by Auguste Rodin, is a bronze sculpture depicting a nude male figure of heroic size, seated on a large rock, leaning forward, his right elbow placed upon his left thigh, with the back of his right hand supporting his chin in a posture evocative of deep thought and contemplation. This universally recognized expression of "deep thought" has made the sculpture one of the most widely known artworks in the world. It has become the iconic symbol of thinking; images of the sculpture in profile are often used to indicate philosophy and other practices of contemplation or introspection. Rodin conceived the figure as part of his work The Gates of Hell commissioned in 1880, but the first of the familiar monumental bronze castings was made in 1904. There are 27 other known full-sized bronze castings of the figure, approximately 73 inches (185 centimeters) tall, though not all were made under Rodin's supervision. Various other versions, several in plaster, as well as studies and posthumous castings, exist in a range of sizes.
François Auguste René Rodin (12 November 1840 – 17 November 1917) was a French sculptor generally considered the founder of modern sculpture. He was schooled traditionally and took a craftsman-like approach to his work. Rodin possessed a unique ability to model a complex, turbulent, and deeply pocketed surface in clay. He is known for such sculptures as The Thinker, Monument to Balzac, The Kiss, The Burghers of Calais, and The Gates of Hell.

The building dates back to the early 17th century, but the fresco is more recent. Made between 1929 and 1931 by an Italian bricklayer Adigheri to decorate the facade of a butcher's, the technique used is sgraffito -- widely used during the Renaissance period, made once again relevant by Art Nouveau in the early 20th century.

What does this sumptuous sgraffito represent? Animals of course, all of them edible. Don't forget that it was originally intended for a butcher! Pigs, deer, goats, game and poultry of all kinds, this facade is a real country walk, enriched with volutes, flowers and arabesques typical of Art Nouveau.
