<p>Floors Castle, in Roxburghshire, south-east Scotland, is the seat of the Duke of Roxburghe. Despite its name it is an estate house rather than a fortress. It was built in the 1720s by the architect William Adam for John Ker, 1st Duke of Roxburghe, possibly incorporating an earlier tower house. In the 19th century it was embellished with turrets and battlements, designed by William Playfair, for The 6th Duke of Roxburghe. Floors has the common 18th-century layout of a main block with two symmetrical service wings. Floors Castle stands by the bank of the River Tweed and overlooks the Cheviot Hills to the south.<br />

Floors Castle is now a category A listed building, and the grounds are listed in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes, the national listing of significant gardens in Scotland. It is open to the public. <br />

<p>It was said a century ago that "The old ash-tree on which Scott of Tushielaw was suspended is still standing among the ruins, and is still called the Gallows tree. It is asserted to bear along its branches numerous nicks and hollows, traced by ropes, in the ruthless execution of wretched captives, on whom that bold and reckless border marauder inflicted the fate which eventually became his own."<br />
<br />
As I have already stated, he was actually executed in Edinburgh, not here, but he may well have had a gallows tree here.<br />

The 1858 Ordnance Survey map, if it is to be believed, marks the position of an old ash-tree known as the Gallows Tree - which was almost directly below the point my drone took this photo!</p>

<p>Eventually the exploits of Adam Scott of Tushielaw, along with the excesses of the other border barons, sufficiently roused the wrath of King James V, that, in 1528/29, he “made proclamation to all lords, barons, gentlemen, landwardmen, and freeholders, that they should compeer at Edinburgh, with a month’s victuals, to pass with the king where he pleased, to danton the thieves of Tiviotdale, Annandale, Liddisdale, and other parts of that country". The king, like all kings of those times, being fond of deer hunting "also warned all gentlemen that had good dogs to bring them, that he might hunt in the said country as he pleased.”<br />
<br />
Calling first at Henderland (where I am heading shortly), the king's party surprised Cockburn thereof (another well-known bandit) at dinner, and promptly strung 'im up! They then continued on, round St Mary's Loch, and on over the hills that separate Yarrow and Ettrick, via the track these days known as the Captain's Road - which reaches Ettrick Water within a mile of here. They must have ridden through at least part of the night, because Adam Scott is said to have been arrested before breakfast.</p>

<p>The Scotts of Tushielaw, like most of their race, were reavers and freebooters. Adam is believed to have been the son of David Scott of Tushielaw and grandson of Alexander Scott of Howpasley (a place 7 miles south-east of here, beside the Borthwick Water). <br />

Adam ‘in Turschelaw’ was already known to the authorities by this time, having had to pay a fine, recorded in the Exchequer Rolls of 1499. He is also recorded in the Register of the Privy Seal in 1503, receiving remission for his reiving crimes. Following that, in 1505 he again received remission, this time for breaking out of Edinburgh Castle, but just two years later in 1507, James IV granted him a feu charter of the forest, stead and lands of "Truschelaw" to Adam Scott with the right to build a tower and fortalice, for a yearly payment of £24. <br />
<br />
His brother William was also a reiver, who in 1502 was riding and committing “stouthreifs, slaughters, burnings and other crimes”, with Archibald and Ninian Armstrong, while Adam specialised in taking ‘blackmeal’, protection money. It appears that he was still demanding money with menaces even while imprisoned in Edinburgh. He was referred to by Bishop Leslie as the ‘King of the Thieves’!</p>

<p>The so called 'storehouse' was 64 feet long. Curiously, its long walls are not parallel, narrowing from 23 ft. 9 in. at the north end to 21 ft at the south end - which must have made the roof carpenter's job a challenge! The basement, for which alone there is evidence, is entered from the west and is lit by roughly formed slits in all four walls. There is an aumbry in the N gable. Below the vault there has been a loft. <br />
<br />
The north (near) end of the storehouse is the gable wall with the window in it, in the centre of the photo. Descriptions of the castle state that there was a connecting wall between it and the tower, which is just off photo to the right, behind the ash tree, however, as this photo shows, there was evidently another building, built off the storehouse, filling this north-east corner of the complex.</p>

<p>Having been surprised here and arrested by James V's party, legend has it that Adam Scott was promptly hanged from the same ash-tree that he had himself suspended many of his enemies over the years. In reality, this was an invention of later centuries. He was in fact taken to Edinburgh, put on trial - and then hanged!</p>

<p>Tushielaw consisted of 4 buildings set around an irregularly shaped courtyard. <br />
<br />
The great pile of stones on the left was where the tower stood, not particularly big and almost square at 24 ft from N to S by 29 ft from E to W. <br />
<br />
Next, on the east side, perched over the hillside below, is a building that is usually referred to as a storehouse. It was vaulted, which suggests it was contemporary with the tower, and while the vaulted basement may have been used as a store, it would seem probable that, having gone to the trouble of building a substantial vaulted building, its purpose was more than just a mere store. The tower being very small, it is probably that the family's retainers would have slept elsewhere - either here, or if the Scotts preferred this more spacious building for themselves, in the next building . . .<br />
<br />
The building that enclosed most of the west side of the small courtyard (the uphill side), is now only indicated by grassy, but quite visible footings, as indicated on the photo.<br />
<br />
There was a 4th building, smaller than the others and off the photo to the right, which closed in the south end of the courtyard. Early maps show it as being connected to the 'store'.<br />
<br />
The grassy ridge in the foreground is perhaps the line of the barmkin wall.</p>

<p>Tushielaw Tower is perched on a small terrace on the side of a hill with the same name, 500 yards and some way above the junction of the B709 and the B711. Hidden in the trees just beyond the road junction is the Tushielaw Inn - an ancient 'watering hole'! This view looks north-east, in the direction the Ettrick Water heads to join the Tweed.</p>
