After partial collapse in 1647, the site was reused and built over by Great Castle House, which became the headquarters and regimental museum of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.<br /> <br /> It is a Grade I listed building and scheduled monument.<br /> <br /> Great Castle House was built in 1673, on the site of the old round tower, by Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort. It is a Grade I listed building, and has been described as &quot;a house of splendid swagger outside and in&quot;. It later became used for the Assize Courts, until they relocated to the new Shire Hall in 1725.<br /> Only fragments of the castle, including the Great Tower and Hall and parts of the walls, remain above ground, and on the site Castle House and Great House have been built. In 1875, the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers Militia, the senior Territorial Army regiment today, made it their Headquarters building and so it remains.<br /> <br /> It is one of the few British castles in continuous military occupancy. The Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers museum is located in the stable block attached to Great Castle House. It includes exhibits relating to the history of the regiment from 1539 to the present day.<br /> The castle is a Grade I listed building[26] and a scheduled monument in the care of Cadw.</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/people/jhluxton/">www.jhluxton.com - John H. The 8 feet (2.4 m) high bronze statue was designed by Sir William Goscombe John, R.A. and Sir Aston Webb, R.A. designed the pink granite plinth. The statue is a Grade II* listed structure.<br /> <br /> Charles Stewart Rolls was the third son of John Rolls, 1st Baron Llangattock, and his family home was The Hendre to the north of the town, where Sir Aston also designed the Cedar Library. The Rolls family were significant landowners in the nineteenth century and major benefactors to the town and county. The statue was proposed by the Borough Council in June 1910, to celebrate Charles Rolls' two way crossing of the English Channel. However, Rolls was killed in an accident at an airfield near Bournemouth on the south coast of England the following month. The statue and plaques around the plinth therefore commemorate his life achievements.<br /> <br /> The statue was cast by A.B. Burton at the Thames Ditton Foundry at Thames Ditton, who produced many bronze statues around the world, including the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus, London. It was unveiled on 19 October 1911, by Colonel Lord Raglan, C.B. accompanied by a large gathering of dignitaries and the public. Rolls is seen inspecting a purposefully incomplete model of his biplane. The tail plane is the missing element on the model to commemorate the cause of the accident. Shortly before the fatal flight, the tail plane was modified in an attempt to improve control.<br /> <br /> The main dedication is all in upper case and reads:<br /> Erected by public subscription to the memory of the Honourable Charles Stewart Rolls, third son of Lord and Lady Llangattock as a tribute of admiration for his great achievements in motoring ballooning and aviation. He was a pioneer in both scientific and practical motoring and aviation and the first to fly across the channel from England to France and back without landing. He lost his life by the wrecking of his aeroplane at Bournemouth July 12, 1910. An interesting church dating back to the 12th century. In particular the dark bottle green glass used in all of the windows creates an unusual light. 14-mile Wye Valley Railway crossed the river three times - at Monmouth, Tintern and at Penallt / Redbrook. <br /> <br /> Redbrook / Penallt involved a single-track curved structure of five girder spans, perched on four pairs of cast iron columns. <br /> <br /> The Penallt Viaduct carried the line for around 300 feet over the England/Wales border between Redbrook Station (Gloucestershire) - noted for its floral displays - and Penallt Halt (Monmouthshire) which opened in 1931 to serve the nearby Penallt village. <br /> <br /> The Boat Inn sits in the viaduct's shadow.<br /> <br /> In 1955, a footbridge was added on the west side, of the viaduct offering pedestrians a safe alternative to crossing the river rather than walking along the railway. <br /> <br /> Four years later, passenger services came to an end and January 6th, 1964 freight services ceased on the Wye Valley line north of Tintern Quarry. <br /> <br /> For more photographs of the Wye Valley Railway remains
