Chartres

Lesley, Marlis and Mark flew from Poland to Paris to meet up with Mark's parents Elaine and Jared. We stayed at a b&b on the outskirts of Paris. It was the same place that Mark and Lesley had stayed a couple years earlier with Flora, James, and Sandra.

This photo is a closeup of one of the “Twelve Apostles,” a group of twelve individual, full-length portraits created by the artist that are on display at the Musee des Beaux-Arts in Chartres. Each portrait is a separate work of art. Although the portraits are not life-sized, hung side-by-side they fill an entire wall of the museum and, I think, are stunningly beautiful.

According to the museum placard (translated from French by Google):

"These enamels were ordered in 1545 by François I and executed in 1547 by Leonard Limonsin from the designs of Michel Rochetel.

After the death of Francis I, they were delivered by the artist to the Chateau of Saint-Germain-en-Laye to King Henry II, who immediately donated them to Diane de Poitiers for the chapel of the Chateau d'Anet.

After the confiscation of the Anet estate during the Revolution, the enamels were placed in 1802 in the chapel of the Virgin of the church of Saint-Pere-en-Vallee in Chartres (currently the church of Saint-Pierre).

In 1939, due to the dangers of war, they were moved again and placed in a safe place with the cathedral treasure. In 1950, by decision of the Ministry of National Education, they were placed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Chartres."

L'évangéliste saint Matthieu écrivant sous la dictée de l'ange (The Evangelist Matthew Writing under the Dictation of the Angel), 1230
Probably from the rood screen of the cathedral of Chartres near Paris
Limestone

This is a frequent scene in Christian art: Saint Matthew writing his gospel under the dictation of an angel, his symbol. The work was probably part of the decoration of the rood screen the cathedral of Chartres, a major highlight of French sculpture from about 1230. Particular attention is paid to realistic details of the composition such as the saint's seat, writing desk and instruments.
The Musee du Louvre, in Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre)
Built over the Louvre fortress (itself founded by Philip II in 1190), the Louvre Palace was the chief residence of French kings from 1546, under Francis I until 1682, when Louis XIV moved to Versailles. Although Louis moved the household, the royal collection remained in the palace and in 1692 it was joined by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, remaining there for 100 years. The palace became a museum following the French Revolution, at the instruction of the National Assembly, and the Musee du Louvre opened 10 August 1793.
