Budapest is the capital and most populous city of Hungary. It is the tenth-largest city in the European Union by population within city limits and the second-largest city on the river Danube. The estimated population of the city in 2025 is 1,782,240. This includes the city's population and surrounding suburban areas, over a land area of about 525 square kilometres (203 square miles). Budapest, which is both a city and municipality, forms the centre of the Budapest metropolitan area, which has an area of 7,626 square kilometres (2,944 square miles) and a population of 3,019,479. It is a primate city, constituting 33% of the population of Hungary.

The history of Budapest began when an early Celtic settlement transformed into the Roman town of Aquincum, the capital of Lower Pannonia. The Hungarians arrived in the territory in the late 9th century, but the area was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241–42. Re-established Buda became one of the centres of Renaissance humanist culture by the 15th century. The Battle of Mohács, in 1526, was followed by nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule. After the reconquest of Buda in 1686, the region entered a new age of prosperity, with Pest-Buda becoming a global city after the unification of Buda, Óbuda and Pest on 17 November 1873, with the name 'Budapest' given to the new capital. Budapest also became the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a great power that dissolved in 1918, following World War I. The city was the focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and the Battle of Budapest in 1945, as well as the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Shot from the esplanade in front of the royal palace (now the national gallery), Budapest, Hungary. The palace is built on a cliff and commands a great view of the city, which is rather normal. Obviously the king would want a view.

But look at those houses in the foreground. They're nothing special. Not particularly luxurious. And yet, from those roof terraces, there is a direct and unobstructed view of the castle. And from the other side of the same houses there is an equally grand view over the river, bridges and old town, including the parliament building.

# In July 2025 I visited Hungary and Budapest for the first time. We stayed at the Mystery Hotel on the Pest side of the Danube. A wonderful hotel though the location was a little bit quiet.

#The River Danube was almost a daily feature of our visit to Budapest. Crossing many of the bridges between Pest and Buda and of course a river cruise

#If your crossing over to Buda then the funicular railway is probably your best bet or a bus. On a hot day its a steep climb

#We had 10 days in Budapest and still didn't a lot of the popular things in Budapest such as visiting the underground caves or the thermal baths.

#One of my highlights was visiting the Robert Capa Museum During a remarkable short life he covered 5 wars and was at the time the worlds pre-eminent war photographer

#Chimney Cakes are everywhere in Budapest. We tried them once and had one each. Another time we would have shared as they are substantial and very sweet like a doughnut cake that is made of a simple, sweet dough, rolled in sugar, wrapped around a spit, and baked over charcoal
