And the Execution of a Ferry Captain." /></a></p> <p><u>The Postcard</u><br /> <br /> A postcard bearing no publisher's name that was published in Great Britain. It features the usual execrable poem that seems to be a mandatory feature of early greetings cards.<br /> <br /> The card was posted in Manchester using a ½d. stamp on Thursday the 27th. July 1916. It was sent to:<br /> <br /> Miss E. Hallam,<br /> 43, Oakfield Street,<br /> Altrincham.<br /> <br /> The pencilled message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br /> <br /> &quot;To wish you very many<br /> Happy Returns of the <br /> Day.<br /> Love Phyllis.&quot;<br /> <br /> <u>The Battle of Delville Wood</u><br /> <br /> So what else happened on the day that Phyllis posted the card to Elsie?<br /> <br /> Well, on the 27th. July 1916, a massive artillery barrage by the British destroyed much of the German defenses in Delville Wood, with patrols describing:<br /> <br /> &quot;A horrible scene of chaos <br /> and destruction&quot;. <br /> <br /> However despite horrific losses, German forces recovered and launched a counter-assault on the eastern side of the wood.<br /> <br /> -- <u>'At Delville'</u><br /> <br /> 'At Delville' is a poem written by Robert Ernest Vernède in 1916. He was Second Lieutenant in a battalion of The Rifle Brigade.<br /> <br /> Robert was wounded during the Battle of the Somme, and was killed in action at Havrincourt on the 9th April 1917. <br /> <br /> He is buried in Le Bucquière Communal Cemetery Extension. This poem was found among his belongings after his death.<br /> <br /> 'At Delville I lost three Sergeants<br /> And never within my ken<br /> Had one of them taken thought for his life <br /> Or cover for aught but his men.<br /> <br /> Not for two years of fighting<br /> Through that devilish strain and noise;<br /> Yet one of them called out as he died -<br /> &quot;I've been so ambitious, boys&quot;...<br /> <br /> And I thought to myself, &quot;Ambitious!&quot;<br /> Did he mean that he longed for power?<br /> But I knew that he'd never thought of himself<br /> Save in his dying hour.<br /> <br /> And one left a note for his mother,<br /> Saying he gladly died<br /> For England, and wished no better thing..<br /> How she must weep with pride.<br /> <br /> And one with never a word fell,<br /> Talking's the one thing he'd shirk,<br /> But I never knew him other than keen<br /> For things like danger and work.<br /> <br /> Those Sergeants I lost at Delville<br /> On a night that was cruel and black,<br /> They gave their lives for England's sake,<br /> They will never come back.<br /> <br /> What of the hundreds in whose hearts<br /> Thoughts no less splendid burn?<br /> I wonder what England will do for them<br /> If ever they return?'<br /> <br /> <u>The Execution of Charles Fryatt</u><br /> <br /> Also on that day, English civilian ferry captain Charles Fryatt was executed at Bruges, Belgium, after a German court-martial condemned him for attempting to ram a U-boat in 1915.<br /> <br /> <u>Keenan Wynn</u><br /> <br /> The 27th. July 1916 also marked the birth in NYC of the American actor Keenan Wynn.<br /> <br /> Keenan is known for his character supporting roles in films such as Annie Get Your Gun and The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. He died in 1986.<br /> <br /> <u>Rosemary Brown</u><br /> <br /> Also born on that day, in London, was the British composer and spiritualist Rosemary Brown.<br /> <br /> Rosemary claimed to have been able to channel the spirits of deceased composers such as Franz Liszt in order to produce new compositions. Trams entered through an arch at the centre of the Birchfields Road frontage 2.5 miles of track much of which was supported on iron columns Almost the entire floor was constructed 4 feet 6 inches below the track level for inspection purposes. <br /> Facilities included offices and stores, its own telephone exchange and entertainment hall where music was performed live. <br /> <br /> In 1947, conversion to a bus garage began. Birchfields Road formed the terminus for the last four trams to run in ceremonial procession from Piccadilly on 10 January 1949. The depot continued in use as a bus depot until 1986. For it was in 1824 that John Greenwood hit upon the idea of providing an omnibus service between Pendleton Church, Salford and Market Street in Manchester.
