Paris

Here are some pictures from a very short 2 day visit to Paris. We stayed on the outskirts of town and really enjoyed walking down the market street, Levis which was near our hotel. We also went to what is supposed to be the world's largest flea market. We had a lot of fun and picked up a few paintings along the way.

The Church of Saint-Sulpice, located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, is a remarkable example of French Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, built over the 17th to 19th centuries. It is notable for the grandeur of its central nave, illuminated by tall windows and stained glass windows that create a contemplative atmosphere and underline the scale of the Corinthian columns. The space is organized in regular modules, naturally leading the eye to the high altar, enriched with sculptures and catechetical elements characteristic of the post-Tridentine period.
Among its points of interest is also the gnomon, an 18th-century astronomical instrument that uses the projection of sunlight to determine liturgical dates, such as Easter. The two organs—one of them built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll—are equally celebrated for their sound quality and importance in the French organ repertoire.
The second largest church in Paris, Saint‑Sulpice attracts both worshippers and visitors, and has even gained literary notoriety by being mentioned in the novel The Da Vinci Code. Today, it remains an expressive testimony to France's cultural, artistic, and scientific history.

Vincent van Gogh painted three portraits of his paint supplier Julien Tanguy, called Père Tanguy by his artist friends. In the version acquired by Rodin, Tanguy is shown wearing Breton costume and sitting in front of a wall of easily identifiable Japanese prints. The bright colors, flat perspective, and treatment of light are characteristic of van Gogh whom Rodin saw as “an admirable demolisher of academic formulae.” The three Tanguy works demonstrate a progression in van Gogh's artistic style after his arrival in Paris. The first is somber, and formed from a simple composition. The second introduces van Gogh's Japanese prints. The last and most advanced in style, skill and color integrates Japanese, Impressionist, and other influences on the Parisian artist community. This painting conveys a sense of serenity that van Gogh seeks for himself. This last painting of Tanguy is seen here at the Musée Rodin, Paris.

From the Passerelle de l'Aigle. Here, you are at the end of the Esplanade du Général de Gaulle.

This passerelle (footbridge) leads off from the SE corner of the Bassin Takis, crosses the Bd de Neuilly and then takes you a block or so further on, down to the Seine at the Pont de Neuilly on the Av. Charles de Gaulle. Continue in this direction and you are heading towards the Arc de Triomphe.
