And the War in Vietnam." /></a></p> <p><u>The Postcard</u><br /> <br /> A Mexichrome Series carte postale that was published by La Cigogne and distributed by Hachette of 74, Rue Aux Ours, Rouen. The card was posted in Orléans on Monday the 21st. August 1972. It was sent to:<br /> <br /> Mr. &amp; Mrs. J. O'Neil,<br /> 214, Pampisford Road,<br /> South Croydon,<br /> Surrey,<br /> Angleterre.<br /> <br /> The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br /> <br /> &quot;Dear Mum &amp; Dad,<br /> Well, here we are in<br /> France, after an easy<br /> drive down to Dover<br /> and a quick and<br /> uneventful crossing.<br /> Yesterday (Sat.) we<br /> went to Rouen &amp; stayed<br /> at the Youth Hostel at<br /> Chartres.<br /> Today we are at Orléans<br /> and are going on to<br /> Tours.<br /> Best wishes from<br /> Terence.&quot;<br /> <br /> <u>L'Auberge de l'Écu de France</u><br /> <br /> L'Auberge de l'Écu de France was a historic former inn and restaurant in Rouen, France, located on the Place du Vieux-Marché at the corner of Rue du Vieux-Palais and Rue de la Pie, near to where Joan of Arc was executed.<br /> <br /> It operated as a traditional local establishment and vintage inn through the 20th. century (with archived menus and postcards dating back decades, such as the 1935 menu printed by the Journal de Rouen.<br /> <br /> The building has been closed as an active restaurant for a number of years, though the structure remains in the historic center. It is now used for banking and other commercial activities.<br /> <br /> It is often confused or associated with—or historically compared to—neighboring old Rouen institutions like La Couronne, which claims the title of the oldest operating auberge in France.<br /> <br /> <u>The Copernicus Satellite</u><br /> <br /> So what else happened on the day that Terence posted the card to his parents?<br /> <br /> Well, on the 21st. August 1972, the Copernicus Satellite, originally called &quot;Orbiting Astronomical Observatory 3&quot;, was launched into orbit. <br /> <br /> Astronomer Lyman Spitzer discovered, the day before the launch, that an error had been made in the calculations of the optimum focus for one of the mirrors, and was able to have the problem corrected before Copernicus went into orbit.<br /> <br /> Carrying an 80 cm UV telescope and spectrometers, the Copernicus satellite transmitted data until 1979, and provided detailed information about the stars at which it was aimed.<br /> <br /> <u>Gilbert O'Sullivan</u><br /> <br /> Also on the 21st.
