In 876, Charles the Bald consecrated a church there and presented the sanctuary with a holy relic: the tunic known as the *Sancta Camisia*, said to have been worn by the Virgin Mary at the time of the Annunciation—when the Archangel Gabriel foretold the birth of Jesus. Today, a fragment of this tunic, measuring approximately 30 by 30 cm, is on display in the church. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chartres. Construction of the new Gothic structure began shortly after 1194 and continued until 1260 (with its consecration taking place on October 24, 1260). It measures over 130 meters in length and approximately 64 meters in width.
