And Tokyo Rose." /></a></p> <p><u>The Postcard</u><br /> <br /> A postcard that was published by the Photochrom Co. Ltd. of Royal Tunbridge Wells. The card was printed in Great Britain.<br /> <br /> The card was posted in London using a 2d. stamp on Wednesday the 5th. September 1945. It was sent to:<br /> <br /> Mrs. Black,<br /> 'Craigmore',<br /> 42 Cedar Avenue,<br /> Antrim Road,<br /> Belfast,<br /> N. Ireland.<br /> <br /> The message on the divided back of the card was as follows:<br /> <br /> &quot;Hello Auntie B,<br /> I hope you are well.<br /> I am having a lovely<br /> holiday over here<br /> with Daddy &amp; Mammy.<br /> Hope to see you soon<br /> when I get back to<br /> Belfast.<br /> Love to you both,<br /> Hazel.&quot;<br /> <br /> <u>The Re-Occupation of Singapore</u><br /> <br /> So what else happened on the day that Hazel posted the card to her aunt?<br /> <br /> Well, on the 5th. September 1945, British troops landed at Singapore and took over without opposition.<br /> <br /> <u>Tokyo Rose</u><br /> <br /> Also on that day, Japanese American Iva Toguri D'Aquino was arrested in Yokohama on suspicion of being the wartime radio propagandist Tokyo Rose.<br /> <br /> Tokyo Rose was a name given by Allied troops in the South Pacific during World War II to all female English-speaking radio broadcasters of Japanese propaganda. <br /> <br /> The programs were broadcast in the South Pacific and North America in order to demoralize Allied forces abroad and their families at home by emphasizing troops' wartime difficulties and military losses. <br /> <br /> Several female broadcasters operated using different aliases and in different cities throughout the territories occupied by the Japanese Empire, including Tokyo, Manila, and Shanghai.<br /> <br /> The name &quot;Tokyo Rose&quot; was never actually used by any Japanese broadcaster, but it first appeared in U.S. newspapers during 1943.<br /> <br /> In the years soon after the war, the character &quot;Tokyo Rose&quot; – whom the FBI now avers to be &quot;mythical&quot; – became an important symbol of Japanese villainy for the United States.<br /> <br /> American cartoons, movies, and propaganda videos between 1945 and 1960 portrayed her as sexualized, manipulative, and deadly to American interests in the South Pacific, particularly by revealing intelligence of American losses in radio broadcasts. In 1949 the San Francisco Chronicle described Tokyo Rose as the &quot;Mata Hari of Radio&quot;.<br /> <br /> Similar accusations concern the propaganda broadcasts of Lord Haw-Haw and Axis Sally. <br /> <br /> Tokyo Rose ceased to be merely a symbol during September 1945 when Iva Toguri D'Aquino, a Japanese-American disc jockey for a propagandist radio program, attempted to return to the United States. <br /> <br /> Toguri was accused of being the &quot;real&quot; Tokyo Rose, arrested, tried, and became the seventh person in U.S. history to be convicted of treason. <br /> <br /> Toguri was eventually paroled from prison in 1956, but it was more than twenty years later that she received an official presidential pardon for her role in the war.<br /> <br /> <u>ZEEP</u><br /> <br /> Also on the 5th. September 1945, ZEEP, the first nuclear reactor both in Canada and outside the USA, went critical in Chalk River, Ontario.<br /> <br /> <u>A Defection in Canada</u><br /> <br /> Also on that day, in an important early event of the Cold War, Igor Gouzenko, a cipher clerk for the Soviet Embassy to Canada, defected with 109 documents on Soviet espionage activities in the West. <br /> <br /> Gouzenko's defection was kept secret from the public for five months, but it forced Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King to call a Royal Commission in order to investigate espionage in Canada.<br /> <br /> <u>Al Stewart</u><br /> <br /> The day also marked the birth on Glasgow Al Stewart.<br /> <br /> Alastair Ian Stewart is a singer-songwriter and folk-rock musician who rose to prominence as part of the British folk revival in the 1960's and 1970's. <br /> <br /> He developed a unique style of combining folk-rock songs with tales of characters and events from history.<br /> <br /> Stewart has released 16 studio and four live albums since his debut album Bed-Sitter Images in 1967, and continues to tour extensively in the US, Canada, Europe, and the UK. <br /> <br /> Al is best known for his 1976 hit single &quot;Year of the Cat&quot;, from the platinum album of the same name. <br /> <br /> Though Year of the Cat and its 1978 platinum follow-up Time Passages brought Stewart his biggest worldwide commercial successes, earlier albums such as Past, Present and Future from 1973 are often seen as better examples of his intimate brand of historical folk-rock, a style to which he returned in later albums. <br /> <br /> His 2009 release, Uncorked, was was followed up by Al Stewart and The Empty Pockets Live in 2024. <br /> <br /> Stewart has worked with Peter White, Alan Parsons, Jimmy Page, Richard Thompson, Rick Wakeman, Francis Monkman, Tori Amos, and Tim Renwick, and more recently has played with Dave Nachmanoff and former Wings lead-guitarist Laurence Juber.<br /> <br /> Stewart appears throughout the musical history of the folk revivalist era. Until the 1950s, the Little Egret was restricted to southern Europe. Over the next few decades it became increasingly common in western France and later on the north coast.
