The image is framed by the rocky and boulder-filled hiking trail on the left, leading the viewer’s eye to the west. The composition contrasts the mountainside with the a spruce and evergreen forest, complemented by the blue skies. The striking contrast between the two elements enhances the visual impact of the photograph. To achieve the desired effect, I carefully metered the image to prevent overexposure of the highlights in the upper right corner. So far this day, only two trains had ran through the town of Shasta in daylight, with everything else passing before sunrise. However, only around an hour before sunset one last train would run through.<br /> <br /> The train would be the southbound loaded manifest MHKRV, rushing through town to make it to Dunsmuir in good time. Originally, I had seen this in Black Butte, but taking a minute to get out of there I wasn't sure that I would make it to Shasta. While originally intending to find a different shot, when I passed here and saw the lighting I realized that despite shooting a few trains here in the past, I would just shoot a different angle. I'm glad I did, as the late afternoon light complimented the surrounding shot very nicely.<br /> <br /> The lead unit, 3000, is an SD70AH-T4. 3000 through 3003 were originally built as EMD demonstrators, but were in full UP paint with patches for the EMD numbers. Eventually, UP would get the units and put them in their current numbers. Overall, UP would end up with 97 of them. Unfortunately, due to the reliability issues these locomotives face, UP has been the only major buyer of these units, and even then some have been removed from service. While some folks may find these units ugly, I will always take the opportunity to shoot one leading when I can, so randomly coming across this was a welcomed surprise.</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/people/194077908@N07/">Tracking West</a> posted a photo:</p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/194077908@N07/54990385348/" title="Backlit Shasta"><img src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54990385348_86a034e299_m.jpg" width="240" height="160" alt="Backlit Shasta" /></a></p> <p>It's just after noon near Klamath Falls, and the crew of the local is almost done with their shift. The crew started the morning switching the yard before bringing cars in and out of the BNSF yard for interchange. Afterwards, the crew would hit the mainline.<br /> <br /> With Klamath Falls being the only city in the region on both sides of the state line, the local serves a lot of customers. Some days, the crew will take the train north to Crescent Junction, where it interchanges cars with the Klamath Northern Railroad. Other days, it will hit the Modoc Line, switching customers in the valley or deadheading cars to Alturas for interchange with the Goose Lake Railroad. Or there's Tuesday, where the crew only goes to two places, BNSF's yard and Worden. On the day I shot this train, it was going to Worden.<br /> <br /> On this day, Ardent Mills, the only customer south of K Falls, was getting a delivery of two hoppers and bringing three loads back. It did not take long for the train to get from Klamath to Worden, only twenty minutes. After dropping the cars on the main, the crew would run their locomotive, 2180, around the cars in the siding. Afterwards, they would hook up to the outbound cut in the spur, then hook up to the inbound cut to put in the spur. By the time they were ready to go, I knew exactly where I was going to go. While traveling northbound on Highway 97, you will pass through the town of Midland, only a few miles before Klamath Falls. Here the Black Butte Subdivision curves, which allows you to get a shot with Mount Shasta directly behind the train. My goal was to shoot at least one train with Shasta, but with all of the daylight traffic running at sunrise through the city of Mt. Shasta, which is where I stayed the night, I was out of luck with a road train. Although I had been up by that time, CORP had a slight chance of running the final train out of Weed that day, so my buddy and I had spent a couple hours waiting there until we knew for sure, but it ended up happening two days later. Thankfully, I managed to get Shasta with a train that to me was almost as cool.<br /> <br /> The main reason for shooting the local this day, apart from the lack of traffic, was the unit leading the train. UP 2180, an EMD SD60, is one of the few operational SD60 series locomotives that is within a ten hour drive of me. Usually, SD60s in the west tend to stay to the north, in places like Hinkle and Idaho, but as far as I know the majority are in the Midwest. Due to this, it makes it a rarity to see one of these in this part of the west. In California, the only of SD60 locomotives I know of that run are two standard cabs and a wide cab that were leased to the Trona Railway from UP, and this was very recent. Meanwhile, several SD60 series locomotives sit in storage lines in places like Long Beach and Roseville. As you could probably guess, this was the first time I was able to shoot one of these leading, and I plan on returning to shoot it over the Modoc Line one of these days.</p>
