<p>During the winter months, Penarth pier closes at dusk.<br />
Most visitors had left and the pier keeper was letting me take a few last pictures.<br />

<p>The incoming tide moves up the beach on a calm winter's day In Penarth, south Wales.<br />
<br />
The pier was opened in 1895 to serve a strong seasonal movement of people on steamships between South Wales and the resorts of Somerset and north Devon.<br />
<br />
To ensure operations would be unaffected by the huge tidal range, the pier has a substantial tiered landing jetty at its seaward end. <br />
<br />
The pier is only 200m in length - it was feared that any longer could risk interfering with the main channel into Cardiff docks, which are 2 km along the coast.<br />
