Olšany Cemetery

Walk through Czech history in Prague's largest graveyard.

For a cemetery created in the hectic panic of a plague epidemic, Prague's sprawling Olšany Cemetery is a beautifully planned public work.

In the 17th century it was considered unhygienic to bury the corpses of plague victims within city limits, so a large cemetery was designated in 1680 for this very purpose. When plague struck again a century later, Emperor Joseph II enacted a series of hygiene reforms and Olšany became the city's official cemetery. It was continually used up until the 20th century, when a number of elaborate art nouveau grave monuments made the cemetery a place for sightseers, not just mourners.

Olšany Cemetery is the largest in Prague and one of the largest in Czechia. This is because it is compromised of 12 different sections. The New Jewish Cemetery was created to replace the Old Jewish Cemetery, and included a small Orthodox section. An even smaller Muslim section sits on the opposite side of the graveyard. It is said that over 2 million people are buried here in over 60,000 grave sites. A "Learning Trail" provides a historical walk through the graves. Visitors can walk from the 17th century graves at the north end of the cemetery to the filigreed mausoleums of the 20th century near the center.

The crisply groomed military cemetery marks a stark contract to the leaning, ivy-covered graves of earlier centuries. Soldiers from a range of conflicts are interred here, from the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century to World War II. Many Czech soldiers who died fighting for their country's independence are buried here, and so are members of the Soviet Red Army who died fighting in Czechoslovakia. As per an agreement between Czechia and Russia, each maintains the graves of their former who died on their soil.

Picturesque setting aside, people come to Olšany to pay their respects to their deceased loved ones as well as some famous figures in Czech history. A number of actors, writers, and painters are buried here, as are Jan Palach, a student who immolated himself in protest of the invasion of Czechoslovakia, and Pavel Roman, one of the first celebrity ice skaters.
"Kinský Palace is a former palace located on the Old Town Square. The palace's name refers to its former ownership by the Kinský noble family. The palace was originally built for a family between 1755 and 1765 in the Rococo style. Since 1949 the palace has been under the administration of the National Gallery, and the building is currently used as an art museum."

"The Jan Hus Memorial stands at one end of Old Town Square, Prague in the Czech Republic. The huge monument depicts victorious Hussite warriors and Protestants who were forced into exile 200 years after Hus in the wake of the lost Battle of the White Mountain during the Thirty Years' War, and a young mother who symbolizes national rebirth."

Prague, Czech Republic (Czechia)

"In 1338 the Old Town bought a large patrician house from a private family and adapted it for their purposes. Over the following centuries the original Town Hall building largely disappeared as a result of renovations and expansion of the building by incorporating other private residences, some older than the originally acquired building.

The burghers of the Old Town extended the original Town Hall towards the west by buying the adjoining house, and construction began of a stone tower on a square plan. The tower, which was the highest in the city in the Middle Ages, was completed in 1364, and has been largely unchanged since then.

The Town Hall is architecturally unusual, because it is constructed from many different smaller houses. The hall's most significant feature is the well known Astronomical Clock which faces the south side of the building."
