<p>St. George’s Basilica is the oldest surviving church in Prague Castle, founded around 920. Its striking brick-red Baroque facade features a relief of St. George and is flanked by the domed Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk. Rising behind the facade are two Romanesque limestone towers. Beyond this Romanesque-Baroque contrast, the basilica historically served as the burial site for early Bohemian rulers.</p>

<p>I wasn't sure if we'd have time but I was keen to see this quirky building. I don't like a lot of new builds but this seemed a lot of fun! This was the view as we approached it. The river runs to the right of this photo.<br />

<i>This pillar of modern architecture in Prague “danced” onto the Rašínovo Embankment in 1996. The project comes from the drawing board of world-renowned architects Vlado Milunić and Frank O. Gehry. Its concept was inspired by the dance skills of the famous film couple — the stone tower symbolizes Fred Astaire and the glass tower, his partner Ginger Rogers. A gallery and a restaurant with a terrace offering a 360° view of Prague can be visited in the Dancing House.<br />
The Dancing house was built in the years 1992—1996. The house that stood there before was destroyed during the American air bombing of Prague on the 14th February of 1945. In 1992 the land was bought by the Netherlander insurance company Nationale Nederlanden. They selected the building project from the architect Vlado Milunic and the worldwide acknowledged architect and designer Frank O. Gehry was invited to cooperate. This co-operation gave birth to a unique deconstructive building with plastic elements, which at the same time harmonizes with the surrounding buildings. It is one of the few Prague houses that dynamically enters the space of the street. The building is metaphorically called the Dancing House or also Ginger and Fred. It is named this way because of the towers reminding of the famous dancers Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair. The male part of the dancing couple is represented by a rock tower and the woman is symbolized by a tower made of glass. The top of the male tower is covered with imaginary hair. The author is Frank O. Gehry. The interiors were partly designed by the British architect of Czech provenience Eva Jiřičná. Nowadays, there are hotel in the building, gallery and a luxury restaurant with a terrace and a beautiful view.The building was awarded the prestige prize of the American Time magazine — it won the category of design in 1996.</i> (From Prague.eu)</p>

<p>After traipsing around the museum in Prague, we caught an Uber back to the hotel for a rest, and soon it was time to have an evening walk and to look for somewhere for dinner. We passed this restaurant on our way to the river (we didn't eat here) - we were on our way to see the Dancing House! In this photo you can see a man hanging up with an umbrella sculpture if you look carefully! This is known as 'Slight Uncertainty' (also 'Little Uncertainty') by Czech sculptor Michal Trpák.</p>

<p>Avant de quitter la place, volte-face vers le même palais Buquoy, mais cette fois sur son entrée cochère secondaire (čp. 486/2), repérable aux mêmes plaques de l'ambassade de France apposées sur le mur à droite.<br />
<br />
Le portail associe un arc en plein cintre encadré de deux pilastres à chapiteaux en forme de volutes, un traitement assez libre, plus proche d'une réinterprétation ionique simplifiée que d'un ordre classique canonique. Au sommet de l'arc, un grand cartouche aux volutes charnues, de facture baroque tardive, sert de clé. Difficile de dire s'il s'agit d'un motif coquillé stylisé ou d'un simple enroulement décoratif, la forme étant trop retravaillée pour l'affirmer avec certitude.<br />
<br />
De part et d'autre du portail, deux arcs brisés à volutes encadrent la partie supérieure de l'entrée et participent pleinement au vocabulaire baroque de l'ensemble. Dans le tympan, sous l'arc, un buste sculpté apparaît au-dessus de la porte, avec l'allure d'un dignitaire romain, notamment par son accoutrement. Juste en dessous, un petit écusson armorié est à son tour encadré de volutes, je ne suis pas le seul à aimer ça.<br />
<br />
La porte elle-même, peinte en vert sombre, présente un remplissage à chevrons cloutés sur toute sa hauteur, avec au centre du vantail droit un heurtoir en bronze à tête léonine. Deux bornes en pierre à sommet arrondi encadrent enfin le seuil au niveau du trottoir.<br />
