<br />
🇬🇧 The wall takes three quarters of the picture and gives up nothing. Two iron brackets hold their lanterns clear of it, the only ornament on the whole surface, and they carry the eye upward and away to the left. In the single seam the wall allows, where one plane steps behind another, a man in a straw hat stands with his head down over his open case, the pan flutes laid out on velvet at his feet. Three people are leaving by the steps at the far end. He has the narrowest strip of the frame, and he is the only thing in it that is alive.<br />

🇫🇷 Le mur prend les trois quarts de l'image et ne cède rien. Deux potences de fer en écartent leurs lanternes, seul ornement de toute la surface, et elles emportent le regard vers le haut et vers la gauche. Dans l'unique couture que le mur consent, là où un pan passe derrière l'autre, un homme au chapeau de paille se tient tête baissée au-dessus de son étui ouvert, les flûtes de pan alignées sur le velours à ses pieds. Trois personnes s'en vont par les marches, tout au fond. Il occupe la bande la plus étroite du cadre, et il est la seule chose vivante dedans.<br />
