LLanercost Priory was founded by Robert de Vaux between in 1169 to house Augustinian Canons. It is situated at the village of Lanercost, in Cumbria. , The Priory had an eventful history as a result of its position close to the Scottish border. It was a target of Scots attacks in retaliation to English raids. The Priory suffered from the turbulent history of the Borders. Lanercost Priory was dissolved in 1538 by Henry VIII. In common with many religious buildings I the Border regions a Peel Tower was built as a refuge for clergy and congregation when raids were expected or took place. The Peelt Tower at Lanercost survives although it is noe a private house.

On a beautiful autumn afternoon a trip was made to south of Stow on the Borders Line. Unit 170406, working 2T85 Tweedbank to Edinburgh, is crossing Lugate Water, a tributary of the Gala Water.

The purpose of the visit was to capture the row of trees in all their autumn colours. Unfortunately all the leaves had gone leaving just bare trees. I will have to try again next year.

Tweedsmuir is a small settlement that sits on the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders, Scotland It lies approximately 38 miles south-west of Edinburgh on the A701 and is 12 Miles north of Moffat. It is an area very rich in History that is well worth looking into.
