Alguns dels combats més forts de l'aixecament de Varsòvia el 1944 contra els nazis foren al barri vell i els seus accessos per el sud. Aquí els polonesos del Armia Krajowa aprofitaren els carrers estrets per reforçar el barri amb barricades, la més famosa de les quals fou la del carrer Piwna. Els alemanys assaltaren aquesta barricada des del 11 d'agost amb les maleïdes tropes de la Brigada Dirlewanger, criminals de guerra que venien d'arrassar el barri de Wola a sang i foc. Aquí no pogueren passar i la barricada aguanta assalts amb blindats Stug III i llançaflames. Tambe fou una fortalessa l'església de St. Martí, que podeu veure aquí (Kościół pw. św. Marcina). No fou fins el 2 de setembre, després de setmanes de combats, que tot el barri vell fou evacuat per les clavegueres abans no fossin anorreats. Després els nazis mataren tothom i volaren les ruines que quedaven de forma deliverada.<br />

Some of the fiercest fighting of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 against the Nazis was in the old quarter (Stare Miasto) and its southern approaches. Here the Poles of the Armia Krajowa took advantage of the narrow streets to reinforce the medieval quarter with barricades, the most famous of which was the one on Piwna Street. The Germans stormed this barricade from August 11 with the damned troops of the Dirlewanger Brigade, war criminals who had just razed the Wola neighborhood to the ground. They could not pass here and the barricade withstood assaults with Stug III armored vehicles and flamethrowers. And beyond that stood like a fortress the church of St. Martin (Kościół pw. św. Marcina), seen here. It was not until September 2, after weeks of fighting, that the entire old quarter was evacuated through the sewers before they were destroyed.<br />

Al mig de la zona controlada pels polonesos des del 1 d'agost de 1944, durant el famós aixecament de Varsòvia, es trobaba el gratacels de la companyia telefònica PASTa. Era un punt estrategic imporant tant per les comunicacions que controlava com per la seva alçada (fou el primer gratacels de Varsòvia i aleshores seguia sent el 2on edifici més alt de la ciutat). Uns 200 alemanys s'hi havien atrinxerat i per derrotar-los fou necessari incendiar els soterranis amb benzina i llençaflames, el 20 d'agost. Es va combatre escales amunt, pis per pis fins que els alemanys es rendiren el dia 22. L'edifici, molt danyat, va sobreviure a la guerra i fou reconstruit posteriorment en un estil menys medieval que l'original. Als baixos i ha una magnífica llibreria d'historia militar.<br />

In the middle of the area controlled by the Poles from August 1, 1944, during the famous Warsaw Uprising, was the PASTa telephone company skyscraper. It was an important strategic point both for the communications it controlled and for its height (it was the first skyscraper in Warsaw and at that time it was still the 2nd tallest building in the city). About 200 Germans had entrenched themselves there and to defeat them it was necessary to set fire to the basements with gasoline and flamethrowers on August 20. The fight took place up stairs, floor by floor until the Germans surrendered on the 22nd. The building, badly damaged, survived the war and was later rebuilt in a less medieval style than the original. On the ground floor there is a magnificent military history library.<br />

La tomba al soldat polonès desconegut, a Varsòvia, es troba en un fragment solitari de columnata enmig del gran solar que és la Plaça Piłsudski. Això es deu a que en origen (1923) es va situar a la columnata central del pałac Saski, aleshores el ministeri de la guerra. Durant la II Guerra Mundial es convertí en la comandancia alemana de Varsòvia, i després del aixecament, tot i que l'edifici estava intacte, es va ordenar volar-lo completament. Però els enginyers de la Wehrmacht que tenien l'ordre, refusaren destruir la part de la tomba del soldat desconegut, per respecte. Se sap perquè a les únique columnes no volades s'hi varen fer forats per els explosius, però aquests no es van colocar.<br />
<br />
Tot al entorn de la tomba hi ha gravats els noms i dates de totes les batalles més importants de Polònia, des de Cecynia el 972 fins Berlin el 1945. També es va incloure una menció a la resistencia anticomunista del 1945-63. Hi ha guardia armada les 24h del dia cada dia del any.<br />

The Tomb of the Unknown Polish Soldier in Warsaw is located in a solitary fragment of a colonnade in the middle of the large Piłsudski Square. This is because originally (1923) it was located in the central colonnade of the Saski Palace, then the Ministry of War. During World War II it became the German command of Warsaw, and after the uprising, although the building was intact, it was ordered to completely blow it up. But the Wehrmacht engineers who had the order refused to destroy the part of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, out of respect. It is known because holes were made in the only columns that were not blown up for explosives, but these were not placed.<br />
<br />
All around the tomb are engraved the names and dates of all the most important battles in Poland, from Cecynia in 972 to Berlin in 1945. A mention of the anti-communist resistance of 1945-63 was also included. There is an armed guard 24 hours a day every day of the year.<br />
<br />
Piłsudski Square has been quite empty since 1945, as the communist government did not rebuild the Saski Palace, but a few years ago the foundations were excavated and there are plans to completely rebuild it. It would be a good way to architecturally restore the political center of Warsaw.<br />

Escenaris on fou filmada el 2001 la obra mestra de Roman Polanski: El Pianista. Tot i que en part fou filmada als famosos estudis Babelsberg de Berlin, Polanski va trobar racons intactes de Varsòvia on rodar la pel·licula força "in situ".<br />
<br />
Aquest es el petit carrer Kozia, en ple centre de la ciutat, que apareix a principis de la pel·licula, quan fa poc que Polonia ha estat conquerida pels nazis. De fet el carrer es tant identic als anys 30 que la placa amb el nom apareix a la pel·licula, pel que l'escena passa al mateix lloc figurat (és dels pocs casos).<br />

Locations where Roman Polanski's masterpiece The Pianist was filmed in 2001. Although it was partly filmed at the famous Babelsberg Studios in Berlin, Polanski found untouched streets of Warsaw where he could shoot the film quite "in situ".<br />
<br />
This is the small Kozia Street, right in the city center (miraculously intact as all around it was destroyed), which appears at the beginning of the film, when Poland has recently been conquered by the Nazis. In fact, the street is so identical to the 1930s that the plaque with it's name appears in the film, so the scene takes place in the same figurative place (one of the few cases).<br />

La Columna de Sigismund (Kolumna Zygmunta) és un dels monuments més importants de Varsòvia, mostrant el rei Sigismund III dalt una gran columna de granit. Fou ell qui traslladà la capital de Cracovia a Varsòvia el 1596. Com tantes i tantes coses, els nazis la volaren expressament el 1944, durant el aixecament de Varsòvia. <br />
<br />
Amb tot, no destruiren la estatua, que fou colocada dalt una nova columna als anys 60. Però els fragments de la columna original es deixaren aprop (Stare trzony Kolumny Zygmunta), als peus del també reconstruit castell, com a recordatori de la bestialitat destructiva nazi.<br />

Sigismund's Column (Kolumna Zygmunta) is one of the most important monuments in Warsaw, depicting King Sigismund III atop a large granite column. It was he who moved the capital from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596. Like so many things, the Nazis deliberately blew it up in 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising. <br />
<br />
However, they did not destroy the statue, which was placed on a new column in the 1960s. However, fragments of the original column were left nearby (Stare trzony Kolumny Zygmunta), at the foot of the also rebuilt castle, as a reminder of the Nazi destructive bestiality.<br />

The Tomb of the Unknown Polish Soldier in Warsaw is located in a solitary fragment of a colonnade in the middle of the large Piłsudski Square. This is because originally (1923) it was located in the central colonnade of the Saski Palace, then the Ministry of War. During World War II it became the German command of Warsaw, and after the uprising, although the building was intact, it was ordered to completely blow it up. But the Wehrmacht engineers who had the order refused to destroy the part of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, out of respect. It is known because holes were made in the only columns that were not blown up for explosives, but these were not placed.<br />
<br />
All around the tomb are engraved the names and dates of all the most important battles in Poland, from Cecynia in 972 to Berlin in 1945. A mention of the anti-communist resistance of 1945-63 was also included. There is an armed guard 24 hours a day every day of the year.<br />
<br />
Piłsudski Square has been quite empty since 1945, as the communist government did not rebuild the Saski Palace, but a few years ago the foundations were excavated and there are plans to completely rebuild it. It would be a good way to architecturally restore the political center of Warsaw.<br />

La plaça del mercat (Rynok) del barri vell de Varsòvia es encantadora i classica. Pero el 90% del que veieu aquí és una reconstrucció dels anys 50 del s. XX, no pas venerables i centenaris edificis. Però això no es culpa dels polonesos, sino dels nazis alemanys. <br />
<br />
Efectivament durant i després del aixecament de Varsòvia del agost de 1944, tant els combats com la ordre deliverada de Hitler de arrasar Varsòvia deixaren la ciutat compleament deshabitada i en ruines. Però com podeu veure es va fer un inmens esforç per a retornar la dignitat a la capital del país. Ja us dic jo que reeixidament, tot i els 40 i pico anys de regim comunista que seguiren a la guerra.<br />

The Market Square (Rynok) in the Old Town of Warsaw is charming and classic. But 90% of what you see here is a reconstruction from the 1950s, not venerable, century-old buildings. But this is not the fault of the Poles, but of the German Nazis. <br />
<br />
Indeed, during and after the Warsaw Uprising of August 1944, both the fighting and Hitler's order to raze Warsaw left the city completely uninhabited and in ruins. But as you can see, an immense effort was made to return dignity to the country's capital. I tell you, successfully, despite the 40-odd years of communist rule that followed the war.<br />

Tot i la seva accidentada historia, en especial al s. XX, Varsòvia conserva bona part de les seves muralles medievals, molt més que, per exemple Cracovia, que en tenia molt més longitud i quedà intacte durant les guerres. Per descomptat ha estat reconstruida, com la resta de la ciutat, de fet. I aquest és el sector nord, el més ben conservat, i la barbacana domina tota la zona.<br />

Despite its turbulent and violent history, especially in the 20th century, Warsaw retains a good part of its medieval walls, much more than, for example, Krakow, which had much longer walls and remained intact during the wars. And this is the northern sector, the best preserved, with the barbican as the most relevant part of it.<br />
