<p>Built between 1473 and 1543, the Alte Mainbrücke replaced an earlier Romanesque bridge from around 1133 AD. The construction was initiated by Bishop Johann II von Brunn with further additions made by his successors over several decades. In fact, this historic stone bridge served as a model for Prague’s famous Charles Bridge which was constructed later.<br />
<br />
The Alte Mainbrücke has been witness to numerous historical events over centuries including wars, floods and sieges. One notable event took place during World War II when the German army attempted to blow up the bridge while retreating but only managed partial damage due to faulty explosives. Post-war reconstruction preserved much of its original look and feel making this historic monument stand tall even today.<br />
<br />
The architecture of Alte Mainbrücke is truly awe-inspiring with its twelve arches spanning approximately 185 meters across River Main connecting Würzburg’s old town with Festung Marienberg on the other side. Its robust build reflects Gothic style architecture prevalent during medieval times in Europe.<br />
<br />
A unique feature of this beautiful structure are twelve statues adorning both sides of the bridge depicting saints and important figures from Würzburg’s history like King Pepin The Short, Emperor Charlemagne among others – added between 1720-1730 under Prince-Bishop Christoph Franz von Hutten’s rule.</p>
