<p>The island of Naxos, has been previously considered to represent a Cordilleran-style metamorphic core complex that formed during Cenozoic extension of the Aegean Sea. The Naxos meta morphic core complex is interpreted to have formed via crustal thickening, regional meta morphism, and partial melting in a compressional setting, termed the Aegean orog eny, and it was exhumed from the midcrust due to the switch from compression to extension at ca. 15 Ma.</p>

The island of Naxos hosts a metamorphic core complex. The core region consists of highly strained migmatites and gneisses, with intercalated marbles and leucogranites, which are separated from a lower-grade deformed and attenuated sequence of Mesozoic shelf succession (metamorphosed to marbles and schist) by a major ductile shear zone and forming a carapace to the migmatite dome. <br />
<br />
The complex has been previously considered to represent a Cordilleran-style metamorphic core complex that formed during Cenozoic extension of the Aegean Sea. The bridge crosses the Rion Strait between the Gulf of Corinth and Gulf of Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese peninsula to Antirrio on mainland Greece. Its five-span four-pylon cable-stayed portion of length 2,252 m (7,388 ft) is the world's third longest cable-stayed deck; only the decks of the Jiaxing-Shaoxing Sea Bridge in Shaoxing, China and the Millau Viaduct in France are longer.<br />
<br />
The bridge was inaugurated on 7 August 2004, a week before the opening of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Olympic torchbearers were the first to officially cross it.</p>

Nafpaktos, now a town with just under 15,000 inhabitants, has been an important port since classical times. During the Peloponnesian War, it served as a naval base for the Athenians, but was seized from them in 405 BC. In 338 BC, the Aetolians took control of the town, which they defended for a long time, though in vain, against the Romans in 191 BC.<br />
 <br />
In the Middle Ages, the city was ceded by the Byzantine Emperor Manuel to the Venetians, who fortified it so strongly that in 1477 an Ottoman army of 30,000 men was forced to withdraw without success. It was not until 1499 that Bayezid II was able to force the city to surrender with an army of 150,000 men.<br />
 <br />
At the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, the Venetian-Spanish fleet defeated the Ottoman fleet stationed there. It was the last major galley battle in the Mediterranean, heralding the end of Turkish dominance. Lepanto was the Venetian name for Nafpaktos. During this battle, up to 40,000 people died in a single day.<br />

From 1678, Nafpaktos was once again under Venetian rule as Lepanto, but was returned to the Ottoman Empire under the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699</p>
