<p>Hadrian's Arch framing the Olympieion landscape<br />

Identification: Frontal western view of Hadrian's Arch, looking through the gateway toward the Olympieion archaeological area and the eastern side of Athens.<br />

This is perhaps the best contextual photograph of the monument.<br />
<br />
Visitors can be seen directly through the great central opening, giving a useful sense of scale. Beyond them are trees and the archaeological landscape surrounding the Temple of Olympian Zeus, while the slopes of the Athens basin are faintly visible farther in the distance.<br />
<br />
When the arch was erected in the second century AD, the nearby Temple of Olympian Zeus had finally been completed under Hadrian after a construction history stretching back many centuries. The whole district therefore became a monumental expression of Hadrian's patronage of Athens.<br />
<br />
The Ministry of Culture describes the arch as standing on the ancient street connecting the old city with the new Roman section developed by Hadrian. Its inscriptions consciously contrast Theseus, the mythical founder of Athens, with Hadrian, the Roman emperor who became in effect a second great patron and builder of the city.<br />
<br />
The modern traffic on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue at the very bottom makes the photograph an excellent example of Athens' characteristic layering: Roman monument, archaeological landscape and a functioning twenty-first-century capital occupying the same view.</p>

Description: This wide photograph places the Acropolis within the modern city rather than isolating it as an archaeological monument. In the immediate foreground is a dense mixture of ordinary Athenian apartment blocks and older houses, their flat roofs crowded with air-conditioning units, solar-water heaters, aerials, chimneys and rooftop terraces. Beyond them the neighbourhood becomes greener and lower in scale before the great limestone mass of the Acropolis rises abruptly above the city.<br />
<br />
The Parthenon stands prominently along the summit, its long colonnade immediately recognisable despite the distance. The ancient defensive walls follow the irregular edge of the rocky plateau, while the steep northern and western slopes are covered with a mixture of exposed limestone, olive trees, cypresses and other Mediterranean vegetation.<br />
<br />
A particularly interesting feature is the strong vertical line of the modern inclined accessibility lift ascending the north side of the rock beneath the Parthenon. It provides a striking contemporary intervention within a landscape otherwise dominated by ancient masonry.<br />
<br />
The heavy clouds give the photograph an unusually dramatic atmosphere. Rather than the brilliant blue skies often associated with Athens, the Acropolis is silhouetted against a textured grey sky, while patches of sunlight illuminate parts of the city below.<br />
<br />
History and significance: The Acropolis was already fortified during the Mycenaean period, but the monuments that now define its appearance were principally created during the great rebuilding programme initiated by Pericles in the 5th century BC. The Parthenon was built between 447 and 438 BC, designed by Iktinos and Kallikrates with the sculptural programme supervised by Pheidias. The complex also includes the Propylaia, Erechtheion and Temple of Athena Nike.<br />
<br />
UNESCO inscribed the Acropolis as a World Heritage Site in 1987, describing its collection of 5th-century monuments as an exceptional adaptation of architecture to its natural rocky setting.<br />
<br />
This is an especially useful photograph for showing the relationship between ancient and modern Athens—the 2,500-year-old monumental citadel rising directly behind the dense contemporary city.</p>

The Monastery of Frangavilla was founded during the Byzantine period, in the mid-11th century. This means that the construction of the original complex predates the subsequent Frankish rule in this region. It is thought that the complex was built on the ruins of an ancient temple.<br />
<br />
However, the name ‘Frangavilla’ dates back to the period of Frankish rule in the 13th and 14th centuries.<br />
Of the former monastic complex, only the katholikon – the main church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary – has survived to the present day<br />
<br />
In March 1993, however, the region was struck by a severe earthquake. The church building suffered devastating damage as a result, leaving it at acute risk of collapse<br />
<br />
Through painstaking work, the church has since been stabilised and restored, ensuring that this gem of Byzantine architecture is preserved for posterity<br />
<br />
The oldest layer of frescoes dates back to the Byzantine period when the church was founded. The majority of the frescoes visible today in the nave and the dome date from the 17th century</p>
