And this crease in the cliff may be the trace of the north-south-running Kerna Fault. If not, we're close. And in any case, the entire scarp marks the position of the much larger, northwest-to-southeast Arachova-Delphi-Amphissa Fault, the upper boundary of the Pleistos Gorge rift. </i><br /> <br /> I suspect I snapped this shot because of all the cavities and solution-widened joints in the limestone pictured here. What I didn't know at the time, however, was just how tectonically crazy the Delphi region is and has been.<br /> <br /> Now that I do know that, however, I find another aspect of this scene more fascinating. How carbonate rock comes to have the texture of Swiss cheese is still interesting to me, but that's eclipsed by a grander tectonic story, in which a huge stack of sedimentary formations was pushed onto and over preexisting rock during episodes of crustal compression. <br /> <br /> Such an overriding assemblage of rocks is called a <i>nappe</i>. And that's what the Parnassus Massif is. It has been thrust northeastward from its original position, and over what is now the mainland of Greece. <br /> <br /> In its core, where lofty Mount Parnassus stands, its sequence of strata has not been disturbed much. But here on the nappe's southern fringe there has been so much deformation that the layers have been completely overturned, like a layer cake that has fallen off its shelf and landed upside down on the floor.<br /> <br /> In nice, placid, and tectonically undisturbed places, such as parts of the American Midwest, you can see a stately and predictable progression of sedimentary strata. The oldest are always on the bottom, and the youngest on top. <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/196253572@N05/54048522665/in/album-72177720319260858">Here's one example</a>.<br /> <br /> This is an illustration of the Law of Superposition, first formulated in the seventeenth century by the Dane Niels Steensen, better known to geology students far and wide as Nicolas Steno. But the Earth's crust is so hyperactive, especially in Greece, that it periodically distorts this natural order of things—even to the point the oldest strata are sitting on top, and the youngest lie below them.<br /> <br /> Such is the case in this photo. Down where we're standing, the rock is either Upper Cretaceous or Paleocene, the latter dating to a measly 60 Ma. But the clock runs backward as you glance higher.
