The last days of the year are always a good occasion for the posting of some old photos (mostly singled out for posting and then forgotten about) and scans.<br />
<br />
One doesn't see many feral horses in Europe anymore. These ones we encountered on a mountain road in Xios. Their history: probably once used in agriculture and set free after mechanization / decline of traditional rural life.<br />

<p><i>Taken from Route 48, the main road from Levadia to Delphi. I’m at the eastern foot of Mount Kirphis, just before the road turns west toward Arachova and the Pleistos Gorge, on the southern flank of Mount Parnassus. But I’m looking in the opposite direction, southeastward toward the terrain through which I’ve already traveled.</i><br />
<br />
Locating this exact spot on Google Earth was quite an epiphany for me. Now I’m seeing from a lofty perch a landscape I’d puzzled over from photos taken in the lowlands to the east. This is the perfect angle to view the southeastern extension of the Parnassus Nappe. <br />
<br />
At right in the middle distance is the hill I would personally call a <i>hogback</i> due to its spine of what appears to be vertically tilted Mesozoic limestone. <br />
<br />
Unfortunately, I have found no specific reference to this hill—in terms of its geology, archaeology, history, four-star restaurants, bowling alleys, adventure playgrounds, or UFO landing sites. It seems to have escaped all human scrutiny. <br />
<br />
It lies just across Route 48 from the town of Distomo. I suppose that it could be topped instead with the ruins of a defensive fortification, which would make it, as I’m sure you realize, an <i>autochthonously cryptoanthropogenic</i> hogback. <br />
<br />
But that projecting wall of stone certainly looks natural to me. Other hills nearby appear to have a similar structure and orientation. Note, for example, the modest ridge on this side of the valley, at lower left. It too has a rocky spine at its summit. <br />
<br />
Farther in the distance and half-lost in this day’s omnipresent haze is Mount Helicon, or, to name it more accurately, the Helicon Range, which I discussed in <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/196253572@N05/54663776411/in/album-72177720323847479/"> Part 22</a>. <br />
<br />
And in the foreground there is that ocher-colored regolith. This stretch of the road parallels the Distomo strike-slip fault, with ruddy-tinted Paleocene-to-Eocene Parnassus Flysch to its east and the Mesozoic carbonates on the west. I suspect this is an indication of the former. However, in this region there is also orangey-red bauxite in the limestone. So that's a possibility as well. <br />
