As noted in a recent upload, visiting here was a spur-of-the-moment thing. I was on my way to the Oregon Coast and found myself nearby, so why not?<br />
<br />
I kept hoping that I would eventually see the tip-top of Shasta, but it seemed as if the mountain itself was determined to remain hidden. Clearly, as the wind blew over its crest, clouds were continually created. In spite of the shy mountain, it was a very pleasant detour, beautiful scenery replete with a little nude sunbathing (if interested, see: <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/80014607@N05/52125831088/in/album-72177720300018964/">www.flickr.com/photos/80014607@N05/52125831088/in/album-7...</a> ).</p>

<p>A westbound manifest freight, led by one of Southern Pacific's 25 SD70Ms, highballs through the reverse curves near the former station of Pioneer, California. A late season storm has deposited a fresh coating of snow on Mt. Shasta. <br />
<br />
By March 1999, when this Kodachrome was exposed, the former Espee SD70s were in their fifth year of service. Big change would be coming soon, once Union Pacific began its massive orders for new power.<br />
<br />
I had previously shot this job on the Dry Canyon Viaduct. This train must have taken siding for a meet somewhere, which would have enabled me to get ahead with enough time to set up for this image.</p>

<p>A year after Union Pacific acquired Southern Pacific, an eastbound manifest with a pair of SP SD70Ms passes a ballast train at Upton, California.</p>

<p>Having departed Brooklyn Yard in Portland the previous evening, Southern Pacfiic's PTLAT (Portland Terminal to Los Angeles Trailers) is rolling through the heart of the Shasta Route at Upton, California. That mountain in the distance is Mt. Eddy, part of the Trinity Alps. It is a beautiful summer morning in June 1987. In less than an hour, the hotshot will pause at Dunsmuir for a crew change.<br />
<br />
My Great Uncle Eddy Wakeman was one of the reasons I have a strong interest in railroading. He lived in Dunsmuir and worked as a conductor for Southern Pacific. When he made trips to Klamath Falls, we would often pick him up for dinner. Several of those trips would include a stop so Uncle Eddy could stock up on cigarettes before he worked his way home to Dunsmuir. As I recall, he could pick them up for $2.49 a carton, a huge savings over what they sold for in California.<br />
<br />
After he retired, I often dropped by his home in Dunsmuir when I was out railfanning. Eddy would tell his tales of days spent working for the Friendly Espee. The house he and his wife lived in was on Scherrer Avenue, next to the main line. One visit, he told me to always park my car close to the house - away from the right of way - because "That's really bad track out there!"<br />
<br />
Now that Uncle Eddy has crested the final summit, whenever I see an image of Mount Eddy I am reminded of him - especially if the image has a train.</p>

<p>This image of an OAPTT at Upton, California has just about all of what made Southern Pacific fun to railfan in the 1980s - big power, "L" shaped engineer windsheld, full light package, and Mount Shasta.</p>

<p>Lake Siskiyou is a reservoir formed by Box Canyon Dam on the Sacramento River in far northern California, near Mt. Shasta. The lake is used for watershed protection and flood control and it's the site of local recreation.</p>

<p>Driving up from Davis Shasta slowly grew in size, it actually looked most impressive from about Red Bluff where it just completely dominates the northern skyline. But, views from the nearby Lake Siskiyou were also very nice.</p>

<p>A long exposure night shot, the Moon was slightly under first quarter, lots of light to light up the Mountain, but it did mean less stars. The Milky Way was also nowhere nearby, but if you got a clear, moonless night with the Milky Way in a good position you could get an amazing shot from here.</p>

<p>On an early spring Sunday in 1991, Southern Pacific's PTLAT rolls through Black Butte, California. The boxcars at left will likely be taken up the Siskiyou Line for loading sometime later in the week.</p>

<p>I have discovered that I have multiple slides exposed at Hotlum, California on July 23, 1988. As the memory banks fade a bit, I have to go with data written on the slides to fill in the blanks. Here are two crops of Southern Pacific's hot PTLAT (Portland Terminal's Lake Yard to Los Angeles Trailers) rolling through Hotlum from that day.<br />
<br />
On this date, my first shot was up at Worden, a couple of miles north of the state line. I caught my friend Phil Gosney running Amtrak 14, roughly on schedule based on the lighting in the image. Following that, I drove down to Cougar and caught a rerouted lumber drag from the embargoed Modoc Line there. Afterward, I went to Hotlum siding and captured several images. Based upon the sun angles, my guess is that the dispatcher used Andesite siding to park the lumber drag I had shot earlier at Cougar, allowing this PTLAT to pass. <br />
<br />
This is the full frame crop. Off in the distance, you can see Oregon's Mt. McLoughlin. It is almost 70 miles north of Hotlum. Mark Hemphill, the cantilever at the SP east end of the siding is also in view. <br />
<br />
It is moderately amazing to me that these photos are now three and a half decades old. Sic transit gloria mundi.</p>

<p>On a marginal March day, an eastbound rolls by Mt. Shasta, a few miles past Black Butte siding. At the time, the dynamic brakeless ex-MoPac SDs were fairly common on the Shasta Route. I liked this angle, and vowed to go back when the skies were clear. <br />

One of these days I'll get back there...</p>

<p>Awaiting a call for work train service on Tuesday morning, a Southern Pacific SD9 spends Memorial Day Weekend 1986 parked at Black Butte, California. At the time, the Nevada Northern gondola coupled to SP 4427 was somewhat exotic.</p>

<p>After slowly winding through the Sacramento River Canyon, the UP 8903 picks up speed as it heads south through Lakehead, California. Maximum authorized speed increases from 25mph to 40mph near Lakehead. Heavy southbound trains can quickly gain momentum before making the short climb to Obrien. <br />
