Where Horses Once Rode Through the Palace

Stand here for a moment and forget the ropes, the visitors and the silence.

Imagine this enormous hall five hundred years ago.

Hundreds of people gathered beneath these extraordinary Gothic vaults. Kings and nobles, ambassadors and courtiers filled the room for coronation celebrations and great banquets. Music, conversation and ceremony echoed between the stone walls.

And then imagine something even harder to picture today:

horses.

The Vladislav Hall at Prague Castle was large enough to host knightly tournaments indoors. Riders entered the palace on horseback through a specially designed staircase and came straight into this very hall.

The room that now feels almost empty and contemplative was once filled with movement, spectacle and noise.

That is what I love about places like this.
The architecture survives, but the life that once filled it has disappeared.

All that remains is the space — and a little imagination.
