<p>This is the interior of the Basilica of St Peter and St Paul - we'd seen online it was stunning, and it certainly did impress us. I had to try not to take too many photos of it as I've never seen an interior quite like it!<br />

<i>Once an hour, the Vyšehrad district is filled with the sound of bells from the chapter church, which has undergone a number of modifications in the 950 years since it was built. In 1903, its construction was finally completed, giving the church its current neo-Gothic appearance. The interior is richly decorated with Art Nouveau ornamental and figural wall paintings. <p>After a rest in the hotel it started to rain but we had things to do! We took an Uber ride away from the centre of the city to Vyšehrad. The outside was stunning, but it was the interior we really wanted to see!<br />

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is easily recognized since it has two 58 m tall towers. It stands on top of the Vyšehrad hill and offers beautiful views of Vltava river as well as the Prague Castle complex. The original Romanesque basilica was founded in these places by Duke and later the first King of Bohemia Vratislaus II in the second half of 11th century. <br />
During the reign of Charles IV (14th century), the church got adapted into a magnificent Gothic building, making it the longest church building in Prague at the time with a total length of 110 m. The church survived the Hussite looting of Vyšehrad, at the end of the 16th century a new Renaissance presbytery was completed, and in the 1720s a large Baroque reconstruction took place. The current neo-Gothic appearance of the church dates back to 1885–1903 and its architect was Josef Mocker.</i> (From pragueticketoffice.com)</p>

<p>L'abbé Kašpar z Questenberka poursuit la transformation du monastère avec une ampleur remarquable. Proche de la cour impériale de Ferdinand II, théologien réputé et acteur actif de la Contre-Réforme en Bohême et en Moravie, il fait notamment allonger l'église de sept mètres vers l'ouest et construire une nouvelle façade. C'est également sous son abbatiat que les reliques de saint Norbert, fondateur de l'ordre des Prémontrés, sont transférées de Magdebourg à Prague en 1627, l'année même où Questenberk fait ériger un monument à sa mémoire dans le chœur de la basilique. Il repose lui-même à Strahov depuis sa mort, en 1640. Son mémorial se trouve à proximité de ceux dédiés à son prédécesseur Jan Lohelius, daté de 1626, et aux fondateurs du monastère, daté de 1727.<br />
<br />
Questenberk réorganise également les espaces extérieurs : en 1613-1614, il fait séparer les jardins monastiques de la cour et des bâtiments d'exploitation par un mur, puis fait construire sous l'abbatiale un petit pavillon d'été, le letohrádek, doté d'une sala terrena et d'une fontaine à jet d'eau. À l'intérieur de l'église, il ajoute, du côté de la nef sud, la chapelle de la Vierge de Passau, à l'emplacement d'une ancienne chapelle des Anges gardiens.<br />
<br />
La façade actuelle conserve des traces de ces différentes campagnes de travaux, même si son apparence résulte de plusieurs étapes. Le portail présente ainsi deux strates chronologiques assez distinctes. Son encadrement en pierre ocre, avec ses colonnes jumelées, son arc en plein cintre et ses chapiteaux ornés de têtes d'angelots, peut être rapproché des travaux entrepris sous Questenberk lors de l'allongement de l'église vers l'ouest. La partie supérieure, aux courbes et aux volutes plus mouvementées, évoque plutôt le baroque tardif du milieu du XVIIIe siècle, lorsque la basilique est réparée après les bombardements français de 1742 et que sa façade est remaniée.<br />

Le décor du portail s'organise autour de deux paires de colonnes à fût lisse, posées sur de hauts socles. Au-dessus, un fronton brisé au profil ondulé se termine par des volutes enroulées. Un cartouche de stuc blanc orné d'une tête de putto précède une niche en forme de coquille, dans laquelle se tient une statue de la Vierge de l'Immaculée Conception, reconnaissable à sa couronne d'étoiles dorées et au croissant de lune sous ses pieds. Deux anges adorateurs sont assis sur les volutes du fronton, l'un d'eux ayant les mains jointes.<br />
<br />
Plus haut, le vitrail porte les emblèmes de la papauté, la tiare et les clés croisées. Ces symboles font écho au titre de basilique mineure accordé à l'église par le pape Jean-Paul II en 1992. La date de réalisation du vitrail reste toutefois inconnue. En contrebas, les vantaux sombres du portail sont ornés de losanges ponctués de clous et de rosettes argentés. <br />
<br />
Enfin, la décoration sculptée de la façade est attribuée à Jan Antonín Quittainer, sans qu'il soit possible d'identifier avec certitude lequel des trois personnages sculptés serait de sa main.<br />

<p>Le pont Charles est un pont qui relie la Vieille Ville de Prague au quartier de Malá Strana, au pied du château de Prague. Sa construction remonte au XIVᵉ siècle. Il doit son nom à Charles IV, empereur du Saint-Empire, qui a laissé dans la ville une empreinte considérable.</p>
